Accessibility and Accommodations Statement
Updated Spring 2023
Please know this isn’t your copy-and-paste accessibility statement! Your success in the class is important to me. If there are circumstances that may affect your performance in this class, please let me know as soon as possible so that we can work together to develop strategies for adapting assignments to meet both your needs and the requirements of the course.
I recognize that life events happen, and the University is not always amenable to such life events. Unexpected life events are sure to affect many of us at some point in the semester. Similarly, I recognize that official accommodations and diagnoses are a privilege of which not all are granted access. In light of these facts, I hope you reach out to me with any and all accessibility and accommodation-related concerns that you may have—official or “unofficial”—so we can work together to make this class accessible to you.
In order to receive official university accommodations for a documented disability, you will need to register with University of Maryland’s Accessibility and Disability Service (ADS). In its mission, ADS “provides reasonable and appropriate accommodations to qualified individuals to ensure equal access to services, programs and activities sponsored by the University of Maryland.” Information about ADS can be found at https://www.counseling.umd.edu/ads/. You can also reach ADS by phone at 301-314-7682 or email at adsfrontdesk@umd.edu.
Whether or not you have official or “unofficial” accommodations, I urge you to reach out to me if there is anything prohibiting you from submitting assignments on time, keeping up with readings, and/or attending class. I aim to be flexible and to lead with empathy, so please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have something going on.
Because of my Accommodations and Accessibility policy, all of our assignment deadlines are flexible. If you have something come up–be that an emergency, a test in another course, an illness, etc.--please email me with an alternate due date for your assignment. It is safe to assume you will be granted an extension if you ask for one (unless it’s the end of the semester), so please don’t hesitate to ask.
